TAG Names Technology Legislators of the Year

The Technology Association of Georgia (TAG), the state’s leading association dedicated to the promotion and economic advancement of Georgia’s technology industry, today announced that Georgia Senator Barry Loudermilk (R-Cassville) and Representative Mike Dudgeon (R-Suwanee) have been awarded with the 2011 Technology Legislator of the Year Award. The award is given annually to lawmakers who demonstrate superior support and understanding of Georgia’s technology issues and industry.

“Senator Loudermilk and Representative Dudgeon are two of the strongest supporters of the technology industry at the Capitol. They understand the important issues that impact technology firms and work tirelessly to see that Georgia is not only open for business, but open for innovation,” said Tino Mantella, president and CEO of TAG.

Mantella continued, “Senator Loudermilk was the sponsor of Senate Resolution 68, which will develop a strategic plan for Georgia’s science and technology industry and help make our state a nationwide leader for technology job and business development. His focus on restoring and growing Georgia’ economy was demonstrated through his sponsorship of SR 68.

Rep. Dudgeon, in his first year, has already proven to be an effective leader in the state. His pro-business, pro-technology attitude, coupled with his knowledge of our education system, will continue to allow him to make Georgia a better place to start and grow a business.”

“The technology industry is critical to growing our economy and putting Georgians back to work,” said Senator Loudermilk. “As this industry grows, it is vital that we develop a structure that will not only support, but encourage its development statewide. I am very appreciative of this award and will continue to work to see that Georgia is a nationwide leader in technology.”

“Having graduated from Georgia Tech and worked in Atlanta’s technology sector for more than 20 years, I understand the impact this industry has on our state. We must ensure that Georgia fosters an environment that ripe for the high-paying jobs that come with technology businesses. This award is a true honor,” said Rep. Dudgeon.

The awards will be presented to both lawmakers before a crowd of top technologist and stakeholders at a special gathering on June 14 held at GE Energy.

Social Entrepreneur Redefines ‘CLASSY’ Through Philanthropy and Action

Growing up, Scot Chisholm wouldn’t have considered himself the stereotypical CEO of a philanthropy company; however, his mom getting cancer put him on a different path – one that would ultimately define who he would become personally and professionally.

Fresh out of college in 2005, Chisholm took his Engineering degree from UMass Amherst and moved to San Diego for a fresh start.  After a short stint working at a local pizzeria, he went on to work as a senior consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton specializing in operations and Lean Six Sigma.  Despite his early successes, his compassion for his mother’s illness coupled with his eagerness to build his own empire would inevitably catapult him in another direction.

Still a newcomer to the west coast in 2006, Chisholm and his friends organized a social gathering to raise money for the American Cancer Society with the hope of meeting some new people while supporting a cause close to their hearts.  Their initial “StayClassy Pubcrawl,” named after the popular Will Ferrell movie, Anchorman, attracted 200 young people and raised $4,000 for cancer research. One charity event turned into dozens.  By the beginning of 2008, Chisholm and his friends had raised more than $100,000 for local San Diego nonprofits, an accomplishment to be proud of, yet still not a viable business model.

LIGHT-BULB MOMENT
While organizing charitable events as a vehicle for young people to get involved was rewarding, it was working alongside nonprofit organizations that gave Chisholm real insight (almost accidentally) into the different shortcomings of the philanthropic fundraising industry.

“For decades, nonprofits have been forced to select from a limited and expensive set of software options to help manage their organization,” said Chisholm.  “The nonprofit industry was demanding better solutions, and we felt compelled to help them.”

StayClassy morphed into a web-based software platform and became the missing puzzle piece: a one-stop-shop fundraising suite that helped any type of nonprofit manage and grow their organization by leveraging the power of social media to expand their reach.

“From it’s inception, the goal of our product has been to make the act of donating social - a part of the running Internet conversation about causes that people want to share with their friends and family,” explains Chisholm. “Many organizations register with StayClassy as the first step in building relationships with younger donors who are attracted to this level of social interaction.”

StayClassy clients are able to accept online donations in seconds, manage donors, publish fundraising events, sell tickets, and market themselves online. With no setup fee, small and medium sized nonprofits on a tight budget are able to benefit from StayClassy’s services as well.

“Most nonprofits simply can’t afford the products that are currently in the marketplace,” said Chisholm. “We’ve completely rethought the norm, and built an extremely affordable, yet powerful set of tools from the ground up to transform the way fundraising organizations achieve their mission.”

GAINING MOMENTUM
By the end of 2009, Chisholm was named as one of "San Diego's Top 40 Leaders Under 40" by San Diego Metropolitan Magazine and StayClassy was selected by MIT’s Sloan School as one of the top three startup companies in the U.S at their 12th Annual Venture Capital Conference.

Chisholm & StayClassy launched their new platform at TechCrunch Disrupt in May 2010.  Since then, more than 1,400 organizations have registered on their site, attracting 130,000 individuals, donors and supporters, and garnering hundreds of thousands of visitors each month.

Major news outlets like Mashable, the online guide to social media, featured StayClassy in their July “Spark of Genius” series as one of their unique feature startups and then again in September as one of the “Top 10 Ways to Start a Fund for Social Good Online”. Other respected news mediums such as CNN, AOL News, The Huffington Post, and TechCrunch have quoted Chisholm with regard to StayClassy and social entrepreneurism.

In October 2010, StayClassy completed a $1.25 million financing round led by 15 angel investors and is using the funds to accelerate their customer acquisition, expand customer service, and further develop its innovative technologies. The company is also taking steps to add more discovery features to it’s consumer facing website by matching individuals with organizations they may want to support.

The company expects to process more than $20 million in donations from thousands of new customers in 2011.

FULL CIRCLE
Although his mother’s bout with cancer was a horrible ordeal for Chisholm and his family, one of the many, but perhaps the most important, lessons she taught him was how to stare adversity in the face, and prevail.

The traits demonstrated by his mother have not only come to define Chisholm as a person, but have cultivated the friendships he has formed along the way, and the company he took part in founding. Five years later, as a result of that initial inspiration, Chisholm and StayClassy are helping nonprofits across the globe raise millions of dollars for a myriad of causes, including cancer research - all under the same company name, StayClassy.

“When it all boils down, the concept of paying one forward, to me, is what ‘staying classy’ is all about,” said Chisholm.  “Is it a strange name for a company like ours? Could be. But then again, nothing we are doing is ordinary.”

About StayClassy
StayClassy (http://www.stayclassy.org) is the easiest and most affordable way for organizations to raise funds and manage donor relationships online.  Based in San Diego, CA, the company develops easy-to-use web-based fundraising software for nonprofit organizations. StayClassy launched its new platform in May 2010, and has over 1,400 customers and over 130,000 individual subscribers using its services. It’s free to sign up, making it extremely attractive to small and medium sized organizations on a tight budget. StayClassy is also the host of the Annual CLASSY Awards, a national award show that recognizes outstanding philanthropic achievements throughout the world (http://www.stayclassy.org/classy-awards)

JVC to Introduce GY-HM790 ProHD Camcorder

JVC Professional Products, a division of JVC U.S.A., will introduce the new flagship of its ProHD camcorder line, the GY-HM790, at the 2010 NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nev., April 12-15 (Booth C4314). With an innovative modular design and a full complement of accessories, the new camera supports multicore or fiber-based production. Plus, as a shoulder-mount camcorder, it delivers outstanding ENG and sports production performance with more features than ever.

The GY-HM790 features three 1/3-inch CCDs, which allow a lighter, more compact form factor for better maneuverability in the field and more flexibility with robotic camera control systems in the studio. It produces 1920x1080 images and can record in 1080i, 720p, and even SD (480i) for operations that have not yet made the move to HD. The camera records at 35 Mbps (HQ mode/variable bit rate) or 19 Mbps/25 Mbps (SP mode/constant bit rate). The camera ships with a Canon 14x zoom lens or without lens, as accommodates a variety of lenses with its 1/3-inch bayonet lens mount.

Adopting the successful tapeless workflow introduced in the GY-HM700 camcorder, the GY-HM790 features a dual card slot design that records to low-cost, non-proprietary SDHC Class 6 or 10 solid-state media cards. JVC’s native file recording technology allows recording in ready-to-edit file formats for Apple Final Cut Pro (.mov) and other major NLE systems (.mp4) that are compatible with Sony XDCAM EX workflow.

An optional ASI output module provides a direct feed from the camera to a satellite uplink or microwave transmitter via BNC – no “black box” interfaces required – for live HD video from the field. Other ENG features on the GY-HM790 include an analog SD pool feed input, 4.3-inch LCD screen, and a high-resolution, 1.2 megapixel LCOS viewfinder. Two XLR inputs with phantom power offer uncompressed LPCM audio recording with manual level controls.

“The excellent image quality of the GY-HM790, coupled with its versatility for both studio and ENG use, makes it an attractive camcorder for broadcasters in any DMA,” said Craig Yanagi, manager of marketing and brand strategy. “Plus, our optional ASI module makes it easier than ever to produce true HD reports from the field. The GY-HM790 does more than shoot great pictures, it literally changes the way live news reports can be produced.”

With its HD/SD-SDI port, the GY-HM790 provides an uncompressed 4:2:2 full HD signal for live monitoring, and a FireWire port provides output of SD signals or the HDV transport stream, so footage can be backed up economically with an HDD recorder. An optional SxS media recorder module attaches directly to the camcorder and allows simultaneous recording to SDHC cards and SxS media.

The new GY-HM790 also builds on the studio capabilities of JVC’s popular GY-HD250 camera with its improved picture quality and cleaner studio integration. Its redesigned studio adapter sled incorporates a modular approach to multicore or fiber connectivity for a cleaner interface. Modules connect directly to the camera without external cabling, so they can be used either with the studio sled or handheld. Plus, JVC’s modular approach allows the creation of additional modules to accommodate future technologies.

Other new features for studio or multi-camera use include built-in time code in/out and genlock. JVC also offers a full complement of accessories, including a remote camera control unit, remote shader panel, 8.4-inch studio viewfinder, and multi-input special effects generators.

The GY-HM790 will be available this summer with an MSRP starting at $11,995, including the Canon 14x HD ENG lens.

A specially configured low light version of the camera, the GY-HM790LL, has JVC's patented LoLux function that provides ENG users with image capture in an extremely low light environment. The LoLux version will be available to broadcast direct customers beginning in the Fall of 2010.

Spring-Clean your Productivity in 2010 with Nuance

London, United Kingdom, With spring time coming, Nuance Communications, a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, is taking the seasonal change as an opportunity to introduce its Productivity Action Plan. Devised to help increase productivity in the office, below are five Productivity Action Plan steps that employers and employees can take now:

1. Clear your desk of clutter. Documents on your desk that have not been used for a month can be considered clutter. Clear them off the desk and recycle them – they are clearly not needed. If concerned they might come in useful eventually, use document conversion technology, such as Nuance’s PDF Converter® 6, PaperPort® 12 or OmniPage® 17, to convert mountains of paper piles to digital files. Additionally, Nuance’s eCopy ShareScan® also enables office workers to share digital copiers and scanners to turn paper documents into digital information that is integrated into their communication, collaboration, workflow, and business applications. Stored electronically, the miscellaneous reports, presentations and memos that often clutter a desk, are easier to file, quicker to locate, take up less space and less time is needed when searching for them.

2. Work in time slots. Allocate time slots to make, receive and return phone calls, and leave desktop handsets on voice mail the rest of the time. Allocate similar slots for drafting, sending and replying to emails. Being disciplined with phone, email and IMS communication will prevent other priority tasks that need to be completed from being interrupted. For more advice on how to use time at work even more effectively, consider attending a time management course. More information about effective time management can be found at: http://www.tsuccess.dircon.co.uk/timemanagementtips.htm

3. Consider how to control document costs. The money spent on document handling can be a considerable – and hidden - drain on an organisation’s profitability. Each year, organisations waste money on ineffectively managed documents. Save time – and money – by unlocking the data that’s trapped within increasingly common PDF file format documents by using Nuance’s PDF Converter 6, and the free Nuance PDF Reader that’s now available. Costing only a fraction of the price of Adobe Acrobat, the latest version of PDF Converter enables business users to save both time and money by providing cost effective and easy access to data that’s captured within PDF files without having to retype it. This negates the risk of costly typing errors, and an average cost of £200 in labour spent when re-creating documents. Document retrieval is another area where businesses can incur costs through time wasted while searching for documents. In this capacity, Nuance’s eCopy solutions are a valuable tool that helps address this challenge and saves companies money by reducing reliance on hardcopies, by turning paper-based processes into streamlined and efficient electronic workflows.

4. Consider the productivity benefits of using voice recognition technology. An effective and reliable alternative to the keyboard and mouse for entering data is desktop-based voice recognition technology – such as Nuance’s Dragon NaturallySpeaking® 10 software, and MacSpeech Dictate. Desktop speech recognition software enables users to dictate at up to 160 words per minute, which is far more than they can type. This can lead to an immediate improvement in worker productivity, by creating documents more accurately and more quickly. Voice recognition technology can also make the power, performance and communication capabilities of a PC accessible to people with upper-body mobility issues, as it enables them to interface with their PC without having to worry about using the mouse or keyboard. This ensures that they can be just as productive at the desktop as their other colleagues. Critically, in the long term, the technology could also help to reduce the risk of suffering from a desktop workspace-related Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI); with an aging workforce working longer hours, employers should be wary of their legal obligations to their employers under health and safety regulations. More details on how to avoid RSI injuries at the desktop can be found at www.nuance.co.uk.

5. Clean up your Intranet. If a company’s employees need to access the intranet regularly, look at it critically and ask employees’ opinions on how it might be improved to help them access the data and materials they need more quickly. Ensure that the data and information is correct and current, and that if they can’t find what they’re looking for, there’s access to alternative resources that might contain the material they need. Using Nuance’s OmniPage 17, PaperPort 12 and PDF Converter 6, makes it easy to store and file documents and organise them logically, so that those who have the authority to access to the intranet can quickly and easily locate the files or information that they need. Nuance’s eCopy solutions offer a Connector for Microsoft applications, which facilitates the capture, conversion and distribution of paper documents into Microsoft 2007 applications. Using the Nuance’s eCopy Connector for MS SharePoint, paper documents can be scanned at a digital copier or document scanner and sent to specific locations in SharePoint for storage and ongoing document lifecycle management. This makes it easy to ensure that all essential documents feature relevant, up to date documents.

Steven Steenhaut, Sr. Marketing Director EMEA, Nuance Communications, said: “Spring is an ideal time to rethink how you work, and take simple steps to optimise productivity at the desktop. By taking the pragmatic steps outlined in the Productivity Action Plan, this seasonal enthusiasm can be channelled in such a way as to help deliver better results and improved performance.”

All organisations and professionals can save time and remove the barriers to personal productivity by using Nuance’s award-winning productivity applications, including; Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10, PDF Converter 6 and PDF Reader, OmniPage 17, PaperPort 12 and Nuance’s eCopy solutions . Over 20 million customers - and numerous industry awards – validate the quality and performance of Nuance's personal and professional productivity applications. From desktop scanning, OCR/PDF conversion and personal document management, to eForms, speech recognition and dictation, Nuance products are proven to save users both time and money.

Red Condor Warns of IRS Underreported Income Notice Spam

Email security experts at Red Condor have issued a warning for a new blended email threat that once again spoofs the Internal Revenue Service. The text-based email, which has a variety of subject lines, such as “the CP2000 notice (Underreported Income Notice),” is asking recipients to “review your tax statement on Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website.” When someone clicks on the link, they are taken to a landing page that includes the IRS header, as well as a link to the IRS Privacy Policy. On the landing page, visitors are asked to “Please review (download and execute) your tax statement.” The link on the page actually installs a version of the Zbot Trojan, which hides itself on compromised computers and allows remote attackers to steal bank-related information, log-in details and other personal data. This campaign is being sent from a botnet, has a moderate to high volume, and more than 2,000 unique sending IP addresses. A similar campaign was blocked in the fall of 2009.

“Given its familiarity with so many people, the IRS is a common target, especially during this time of the year as consumers and businesses are getting ready for tax season,” said Dr. Tom Steding, president and CEO of Red Condor. “In addition, many people fear the IRS, and an email with the subject line containing underreported income does catch people’s attention. Unfortunately, because the email appears to come from the federal government, they may be more likely to follow the instructions in the email. And it doesn’t take very many people clicking on the links for the spammers to profit from the campaign.”

As with past IRS spam warnings, the IRS has made it very clear that it does not communicate with individual taxpayers via email, so any email with the IRS’ brand on it is likely going to be a scam and should be forwarded to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov and then deleted.

This campaign was detected by Red Condor’s Spam Trigger filter, which quickly identifies spam and phishing campaigns before they penetrate users’ networks. Once identified, the campaigns are quarantined and reviewed as rules are written and automatically distributed to Red Condor’s antispam appliance and Hosted Service customers.

Hard-hitting Year Ahead For Print Media And Radio

Increasing investment in social media, mobile marketing, email marketing and search will fuel a 17 per cent surge in digital marketing spending this year, as marketers migrate budgets from television, print and radio. ExactTarget, the on-demand email and one-to-one marketing specialist worked in conjunction with Econsultancy, the digital publishing and training group, to conduct a survey of over 1000 company and agency marketers around the globe.

The outlook for offline channels is much less favourable than its digital competitors, where 28 per cent of marketers will shift their overall marketing budgets towards digital in 2010.In contrast, the research depicts a healthier outlook for the burgeoning digital marketing industry, with 66 per cent of companies increasing their online marketing spend, and a further 30 per cent stating that they will maintain the same levels of spend in this area. On average, digital marketing currently accounts for 24% of overall marketing spend.

Peter McCormick, the general manager and co-founder of ExactTarget comments: “The shift from offline to online is in full swing as marketers look to measure direct increases in top-line sales, site traffic and improve overall marketing return on investment. Interestingly, brand reputation is becoming a more significant driver of the migration to digital marketing, particularly when it comes to social media.”

70 per cent of in-house marketers plan to increase their budgets for off-site social media marketing efforts, using agencies to engage with audiences on Facebook, Twitter and other networking sites. But according to agency respondents the biggest impediment to digital marketing investment is a general lack of understanding of digital marketing channels. Just under half (48%) of agency respondents cite this as the key reason, which prevents their clients from investing more money in this area.

“The research shows a healthy outlook for the digital marketing industry with the majority of responding companies increasing their budgets for most digital channels,” said Linus Gregoriadis, research director at Econsultancy. “Social media marketing is the area where companies are most likely to be spending more money during 2010, but areas such as search engine marketing and email marketing will remain buoyant.”

The research also looked at the effectiveness, measurement and allocation of budgets, and probed the differences between "traditional" and digital marketing investment. Online and offline channels have been compared individually, in terms of where companies are investing and their ability to measure return on investment (ROI).

Marketers can download a summary of the More Money, More Channels: Marketing Budgets For 2010 free of charge here. The entire report is available for purchase from Econsultancy online.
