California ETEC Receives Presidential "E" Award for Export Service

California ETEC was awarded the Presidential “E” Award for Export Service by U.S.  Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke at the Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. on May 16th, 2011.  The “E” Awards are the highest recognition any U.S. entity may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports.

The recruitment of international students to California and U.S. campuses has been our exclusive focus the past 5 years, and we are honored to receive the “ E” Award, said Mark Matsumoto, President and CEO.   Since 2006,  California ETEC has provided a platform for US education and training providers to recruit international students and delivery education programs throughout Asia.  California ETEC provides an array of free and cost-effective services for education providers to expand their international student recruitment or develop new international linkages.

The export of education services generates more than $19 billion dollars in exports for the U.S.  and contributes nearly $ 3 billion dollars to local economy in California.   Moreover, revenues from international student tuition and overseas program delivery are increasingly counted upon to make up for shortfalls in public and private education funding in the United States.

“Exports are a key driver of America’s economic recovery,” said Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke.  “President Obama’s National Export Initiative(NEI), which aims to double U.S. exports by 2015 in support of several million American jobs, is a robust, forward-looking trade agenda with an emphasis on domestic job growth.  California ETEC is being honored for making significant contributions toward fulfilling that agenda. “

A business client of the Department’s U.S. Commercial Service,  California ETEC has benefitted from business matchmaking services to greatly expand its export sales.   California ETEC demonstrated a substantial increase in the volume of exports over a four-year period,  a major criteria for the award.

Bright Green Academics at the Forefront of Sustainability

Alliant International University’s Marshall Goldsmith School of Management (MGSM) has been confirmed as ISOS Group’s regional collaborating partner in Southern California and the surrounding region. Due to a growing demand for certifications in Sustainability Reporting aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) widely used G3 Framework, additional events are scheduled at Marshall Goldsmith’s green facilities in beautiful San Diego.

When Nancy Mancilla, owner of ISOS Group first heard about the opportunity to become a GRI certified training partner for the United States, she immediately thought of engaging the professor who first introduced the term “sustainability” into her vocabulary. “Sustainability Accounting Pioneer”, David Bainbridge showed immediate interest and began to work with ISOS Group on developing their training program to be administered in California. This comes at a perfect time for MGSM, since they are one of a handful of institutions in the United States offering an MBA in sustainable management practices.

MGSM faculty members including Dr. Rachna Kumar and Dr. Jennifer Roney have even taken advantage of becoming certified. Dr. Kumar describes the GRI Certification course as “providing advanced insights into GRI’s sustainability reporting framework and its application as an anchor for understanding the drivers and best practices in the area.” MGSM’s Bright Green MBA program students will also have the opportunity to enhance their studies through this complimentary certification, just as private and non-profit sustainability professionals, policy makers, consultants and other academicians will benefit from this technique of tracking and reporting progress in social, environmental and economic areas affecting day-to-day operations.

ISOS Group has recently established a number of collaborative partnerships across the country. Each entity will offer the certification in different formats in order to appeal to various audiences. Courses offered through MGSM are adapted to organizations of all sizes, small and medium-sized enterprises, and sector-specific groups. As part of ISOS Group’s operating philosophy to increase accessibility to academics, sponsorships will be sought out to help offset costs to graduate students. ISOS and Alliant have already successfully delivered courses and are currently inviting interested parties to register for the October 7-8, 2010 event. For more information about our sponsorship program and upcoming events, please refer to: http://isosgroup.com/gri-certified

About MGSM: Marshall Goldsmith School of Management (MGSM) offers programs in Business and Management, International Relations and Organizational Psychology at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels.  The programs offered integrate within the larger framework of sustainability across the different degrees.  MGSM’s business programs aim to have an interdisciplinary and systemic approach while infusing sustainability into every discipline. The school is driven by the goal to produce graduates who think critically about solving problems, have competence in the human side of business and posses abilities to make a difference in addressing global challenges. www.mgsm.alliant.edu

Rutgers Business Plan Competition awards entrepreneurial students with viable start-up ideas

When around a business long enough, eureka moments to create a business that fills a need and makes money come and go. Sometimes an idea makes so much sense it’s a wonder it isn’t being done. But then the old adage “it takes money to make money” comes into play and the idea dies. Enter the Rutgers Business School (RBS) Business Plan Competition, an annual event that has been awarding cash prizes to entrepreneurial students for 10 years to give great ideas the push to start a viable business.

Sunay Shah (RBS MBA ’10) saw an opportunity to jumpstart his business idea by entering the 2010 competition. Shah’s winning idea, to provide patients waiting to receive care in a doctor’s office a hand-held interactive device with their personal health records and customized medical information loaded on it, was one of 31 business plans entered in the competition. Shah and partner Maria Frantz, who received a Masters in Science – Biostatistics from Rutgers, won the $20,000 first place prize to invest into their business.

“Servicing technology for physicians for the past 10 years, I started seeing a lot of things in doctor’s offices that could be done to close the information gap between doctor and patient,” said Shah, who founded his company StratiMed in 2008. “This money will immediately allow us to buy the hardware and software needed to start selling,” he said.

Open to students in the RBS undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA programs as well as recent RBS alumni, teams competed for $35,000 in cash prizes provided by the Sales Executives Club of Northern New Jersey Foundation. “The Business Plan Competition shows Rutgers commitment to encourage entrepreneurship,” said Richard Romano, president of the Sales Executive Club of Northern New Jersey Foundation, and member of the RBS Board of Advisers.

There was a tie for second place between Equal Footing, submitted by Dan Spindler, Executive MBA – Marketing, 2010, and Big Day Network, submitted by Mike DeCesare, BS in Business, expected December 2010, with each team winning $7,500.

Spindler’s idea for Equal Footing came from his wife who teaches handicapped children. “We want to create a web-based tool to advance the life of people with disabilities,” he said. Spindler said the business plan competition money would help him do a lot of marketing to promote the idea.

With an enthusiastic grin, DeCesare said that his idea came from his mother who has always wanted to be a wedding planner. The Big Day Network website, which is hoping to “transform the event planning industry,” according to DeCesare, will be launched in September thanks to the business plan competition prize money.

The objective of the Business Plan Competition is to encourage the development of students’ business plans that have the potential to be funded and launched. More than just a competition, “it is a reflection of Rutgers Business School’s strong corporate partnerships and its emphasis on preparing its students and graduates to succeed in applying business concepts to real-world challenges,” said Michael R. Cooper, PhD., Dean of Rutgers Business School.

Previous winners were in 2009, The Intersect Fund, a micro lender based in New Brunswick and comprised mostly of volunteer Rutgers Students, and in 2008, Bookswim, a book rental service with a similar business model to the one Netflix uses.

World-renowned executive coach launches Leadership Program

New York Times best-selling author and Executive Coach, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, PhD, has partnered with Charlotte based WeSkill, to develop an innovative leadership program for business executives.  Recognized as one of the fifteen most influential business thinkers in the world by Forbes and The (London) Times, Marshall’s partnership with WeSkill, a local business education delivery firm, establishes Charlotte as a hub for progressive leadership instruction.

WeSkill’s innovative Leadership program is 6-months in the making with insight provided by another well known thought leader, partner and fellow mentee of Goldsmith, Dr. Frank Wagner, PhD.  “In a wired, hectic, ‘never the right time to work for oneself’ society, improving leadership needs to be specific, time sensitive, measured and reinforced.  The WeSkill platform is the only delivery platform that can honestly say it hits each of these conditions,” says Dr. Wagner.  Dubbed, “The Federal Express of Feedback,” while working with senior executives at IDS American Express, Dr. Frank Wagner has helped leaders achieve positive, long-term change in behavior since 1976.  Together, Wagner, Goldsmith and the WeSkill team including founders Brian Parsley and Michael Hernandez, have created an in-depth foundation in established leadership principles and practice. Their challenging program focuses on personal values and behaviors, immediate and continuing improvement of concepts and skills, added insight into the many elements of leadership, and the creation of a personal philosophy of leadership.  Working in harmony with the busy lives of professionals, the program blends online courseware with peer reinforcement to facilitate a face-to-face exchange of ideas, experiences and visions.

“Choosing WeSkill as a partner in developing an innovative leadership program was a no brainer,” says Dr. Goldsmith.  “They’re consistent in their ability to provide reliable, relatable and relevant processes for behavioral change at the executive level.  It is my belief that our leadership program has been designed to help top executives achieve genuine success in their role as leaders."

Co-founder and COO of WeSkill, Michael Hernandez emphasizes, “Charlotte is the leader in knowledge capital.  This program harvests the same type of “best in class” leadership principles and truly has the ability to make Charlotte what Silicon Valley is to technology.  It’s an online tool that allows for 360 degree conversations between senior executives and their leadership teams – an interaction missing from today’s intense business climate. ”

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, PhD and Dr. Frank Wagner, PhD are available for media interviews.  To schedule, call 704-944-9400.

Turning Todays' Executive Challenges into Tomorrow's Successes

Summit Consulting and Training, the UK and Bahrain based leadership and management development company has announced the launch of its specialist executive and high-potential coaching service at http://www.scottwatson.co.uk/.

The new service, which has been painstakingly developed during the past three years, is intended to help key business executives and high-potential managers maximise their effectiveness and enhance employee engagement.

More than ever before, business leaders and managers are under ever-increasing pressure to deliver more value for their company, their employees and of course eager investors.  But according to a survey of over 100 senior corporate executives undertaken by Summit, many leaders do not have access to a specialist, expert executive coach who can assist them in tackling significant business challenges more effectively and help them to develop higher levels of employee engagement.

Speaking of the launch, Scott Watson said, 'The current economic climate brings with it very different challenges than those faced during a period of economic growth or stability, and many leaders, whilst being technically brilliant, lack the very mature inter-personal skills, qualities and awareness to lead at or near their best on a consistent basis.'

But what did the survey results find?

78% of recipients stated that they did not currently have access to an executive coach, even though they thought they would benefit from such support

84% of recipients stated that they would prefer their company to recommend executive coach support rather than initiate it themselves

73% of recipients stated that they currently did not have time to participate in an executive coaching programme

but 86% stated that they believed they would benefit significantly by participating in an executive coaching programme

Commenting on the findings of the research, Watson stated, 'It is apparent that many executives believe they can enhance their effectiveness by participating in an executive coaching programme, but they perceive the obstacle in their way is a perceived absence of time to do it.  And he believes that it is this very belief that will cause some executives to carry on as they currently are, even though they believe that their current habits and practices aren't adding best value to their employer. He continued, 'If an executive witnessed one or more of their direct reports under-performing, losing focus and not delivering the best results in terms of quality, productivity, efficiency and value, I expect the executive wouldn't think twice about addressing the person and the issue.'

And what does Watson see as the major stumbling block for executives not committing to an executive coaching programme?  'There aren't many employees who would be brave, or foolish enough to tell their boss that they weren't performing as well as they should, and that's the reason so many executives don't receive the candid, supportive feedback they would benefit from so greatly.' he concludes.

New Community Colleges Selected To Expand Plus 50 Initiative

WASHINGTON – Community colleges around the nation are turning to the Plus 50 Initiative at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) for help in designing programs for baby boomers, who are increasingly returning to campus for job training and to makeover careers waylaid by the economic recession.

“With President Obama calling on our nation’s community colleges to help unemployed and laid off Americans get back to work, we are seeing increased demand from college leaders for support in structuring effective programs for plus 50 adults,” said George R. Boggs, AACC President and CEO. “This expansion effort will share best practices with more colleges and help them more efficiently work with baby boomers.”

Thirty-two additional colleges will join the initiative, which started with 15 grantee colleges in 2008 and expanded its work to include 12 additional community colleges in 2009. The expansion pairs existing and more experienced Plus 50 colleges with additional community colleges that will become “affiliates” of the Plus 50 Initiative.

Four colleges designated as learning partners will serve as guides to help six community colleges implement plus 50 programs that help baby boomers returning to campus for job training and to improve their skills.

Century College in White Bear Lake, Minn. will be the Learning Partner for Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay, Wis.

Community Colleges of Spokane will serve as a Learning Partner for Shoreline Community College in Shoreline, Wash.

Central Florida Community College in Ocala, Fla. will serve as Learning Partner for Pasco-Hernando Community College in New Port Richey, Fla. as they expand their focus beyond lifelong learning programming to include workforce training and retraining opportunities for plus 50 students.

Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood, Wash. will serve as a Learning Partner for the other community colleges in Pierce County, Wash. Clover Park will work with Bates Technical College, Tacoma Community College, Pierce College District 11 which includes Pierce College-Fort Steilacoom and Pierce College-Puyallup.

Four additional community colleges will serve as Plus 50 Initiative Peer-to-Peer Ambassadors or regional conference host working to expand the network of plus 50 colleges by reaching out to additional community colleges. They will share information about how to start and sustain a quality educational program for plus 50 students. They will also invite the new colleges to participate in national discussions on effective programming for plus 50 students.

St. Louis Community College will serve as a Plus 50 Initiative Peer-to-Peer Ambassador with fellow member institutions in the Missouri Community College Association, including Crowder College; East Central College; Jefferson College; Mineral Area College; Moberly Area Community College; Ozarks Technical Community College; North Central Missouri College; State Fair Community College; St. Charles Community College and Three Rivers Community College.

Clark College in Vancouver, Wash. will serve as a Plus 50 Initiative Peer-to-Peer Ambassador for Centralia College, Lower Columbia College, Olympic College and South Puget Sound Community College in Washington state and Clackamas Community College, Mt. Hood Community College and Umpqua Community College in Oregon.

Joliet Junior College will serve as a Plus 50 Peer-to-Peer Ambassador for three other Illinois community colleges including Kishwaukee College in Malta, Parkland College in Champaign and Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville.

Richland College in Dallas, Texas, will host a Plus 50 Initiative Conference for the six other community colleges in the Dallas County Community College District, including the Bill J. Priest Campus of   El Centro College, Brookhaven College, Cedar Valley College, Eastfield College, Mountain View College, and North Lake College.

The Plus 50 Initiative began its efforts to help community colleges faced with an expanding baby boomer student population by focusing on learning, training and career development, and volunteering. The three-year project is sponsored by the AACC with a $3.2 million grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies.

For 90 years, the AACC has been the leading advocate for the nation’s community colleges, which currently number more than 1,173 and serve close to 12 million students annually. Its membership comprises 90% of all public two-year colleges – the largest, most accessible, most diverse sector of U.S. higher education. As institutions committed to access, community service and lifelong learning, community colleges have long-focused on the needs of adults who are already in the workforce, many of whom are seeking new skills and knowledge for changes in their lives and careers.

Simple Project Management Knowledge Test Available

PMForum, Inc announced today the availability of a simple project management knowledge test through PMForum’s partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Project Management (CEPM). PMForum operates www.pmforum.org, the world’s oldest website devoted to professional project management, and produces the popular monthly global project management e-Journal PM World Today.

The simple project management knowledge test, called the Project Management Knowledge Quotient (PMKQ), comes in several versions for project mangers and practitioners to test their knowledge of project management concepts, terms and methodologies. The PM Knowledge test can be accessed through the PMKQ website at http://cepm-pmforum.com/PMKQOnline/index.aspx.

According to David Pells, Managing Editor at PMForum, “I thought that I was pretty knowledgeable about project management. But when I took these simple tests, I found some areas where I either answered a question wrong or needed to refresh my knowledge.”

Designed to be a first step in the project management learning process, PMKQ involves a set of questions and problems related to managing projects that a well experienced or well educated project manager should know the answers to. The test comes in three versions – Yellow Belt, Green Belt and Black Belt.

Yellow Belt is a simple test of basic project management knowledge, with registration valid for seven days. Green Belt test includes more topics and questions, with registration valid for 10 days. Black Belt covers more topics, with registration valid for 15 days. A Composite version is also available, with registration valid for 30 days to allow maximum exposure and benefits.

“It’s probably a good idea to test your knowledge before signing up for some expensive training,” added Pells. “This approach might also be a good idea for an organization or PMO that wants to assess the current knowledge of project teams members or employees.”

PMKQ is one of the products offered through the PMForum – CEPM partnership. PMForum announced on 23 February 2010 a partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Project Management (CEPM) of New Delhi, India to offer a set of high quality, low cost, online project management courses, including CEPM's renowned Certificate in Project Management (CIPM). A description of the partnership can be found at http://www.pmforum.org/partners/cepm.html. The new courses can now be found at www.cepm-pmforum.com.
